Notes From the Collective: Therapy in a Political Climate
Whew. Let’s be real, living through this current political moment is a lot. Every day it seems like there’s something new in the news cycle that stirs up stress, frustration, or even fear. For folks of color, it’s not just about watching politics happen “out there,” it’s about feeling the ripple effects in our homes, our bodies, our paychecks, our classrooms, and our communities.
And while therapy can’t change the political climate, it can give us a grounded space to process what all this means for us as individuals and as a collective.
Here are a few ways therapy can be a supportive tool right now:
Naming what’s heavy – Sometimes we’re carrying stress that we haven’t even spoken aloud. Therapy can be a space to say, “This is a lot” without having to minimize or explain it away.
Connecting the dots – Political decisions often impact our daily lives in ways that aren’t immediately obvious. Therapy helps us untangle those threads and understand the deeper impact on our mental health and well-being.
Building coping practices – Whether that looks like unplugging from the news when needed, creating rituals of rest, or learning grounding skills when the world feels overwhelming, therapy can help you design practices that fit your life.
Reclaiming agency – When systems feel huge and immovable, therapy can remind us of what we can control: protecting our peace, setting boundaries, nurturing joy, and leaning into community care.
Honoring identity and resilience – For Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, therapy can be a place where identity isn’t erased but centered. Where our experiences are affirmed and where resilience is honored without romanticizing struggle.
Therapy won’t make the noise of the world disappear, but it can help you meet it with more grounding, more clarity, and more compassion for yourself.
At The Charisma Collective, I hold space that acknowledges both the personal and the collective weight we’re carrying in times like these. You don’t have to navigate it alone. Healing is possible, even here, even now.
